Introduction to the work
Kavafis

Ricos
Peter Bien, one of the greatest living Western neo-Hellenists, spent a large part of his working life as a professor of English and comparative literature at Dartmouth College in the United States. He is a co-founder of the American Association for Neohellenic Studies, and was twice elected as its president. He is one of the founders of the Journal of Modern Greek Studies, the first and most important North American scholarly publication devoted exclusively to Neohellenic studies. This amiable old gentleman, American amiable, bearing the Mediterranean heat without complaint, emphasizes, somewhat on a personal basis, that Neo-Hellenic studies were a wonderful gift for him. He discovered thirty-five years ago, a literature so rich and so little researched and translated. Back in 1983, the publisher Efstatijadis collected three studies (Kafavis, Kasansakis and Ricos) into one book, the translation of which is available to our readers; Peter Bean, Three generations of Greek poets, introduction to the work of Cavafy, Kazantsakis, Ricos.
