Summary
Hito Steyerl: Duty Free Art
Art in the Age of Planetary Civil War
The inviolable place of art has been shaken, its position in the era of digital globalization, growing inequalities and digital technologies is increasingly at the service of capital. In a reality of endless civil wars, "deep state" surveillance, frenzied populations exploited by social media, works of art become currencies on the global market. The financialization of art is done through trade, global megamuseums and duty-free zones, and artificial intelligence mercilessly drags it into the catastrophic, post-democratic consciousness of a networked society.
Through the analysis of information, fake news, video games, wikileaks files, digital noise, the author reveals the paradoxes of globalization, political economies, visual culture and artistic production.
