Summary
Miško Šuvaković: Vocabulary of the Theory of Art
It is a collection of terms, arranged in alphabetical order, which can be read and indexed to each other according to different criteria.
The author has been working on the book for the last twenty years and it has been published in several shorter versions. In a way, it has become a permanent work on indexing, mapping and interpretation of modern and contemporary international, as well as global or local art, culture and society. This edition is the first comprehensive one and it includes, among others, artists from the Near and Far East. With the glossary of art theory, the author wanted to interdisciplinaryly point out the complex, often contradictory and dramatic relations between art and theory in modern, postmodern and contemporary transitional and global societies and cultures. The book is conceived so that various problems of modern, postmodern and contemporary art, culture and society are theorized and thus presented in complex relationships of critical and analytical confrontation of intersubjectivity and intertextuality, in fact, open knowledge about potential knowledge about art, culture and society. Over a thousand terms and three thousand artists are covered.
The book is written in the form of a glossary. It was not realized as a text of chronologically connected debates, but as a collection or register of terms arranged in alphabetical order that can be read and indexed to each other according to different criteria. These are the criteria of theoretical chronologies, relationships between phenomena and movements, disciplinary and media affinities, theoretical and theoretical-problematic correspondences.
