Matthaus Merian: View of Ragusa and Negroponte

Topographer, engraver and publisher (1593 - 1650). He studied in Zurich and worked in Frankfurt am Main. His most famous work is a systematic collection of plans and panoramas of cities called Theatri Europei Oder Historische Beschrei Vornemdsten und denckwurdigsten Geschichten, so sich hin weider in Europa sonderlich im Reic Nation von Anno 1642 bis Anno 1647. In the period from 1629 to 1718, this work saw several editions. Archeologica Cosmica is his work, which also went through several editions in the period from 1638 to 1649. He is also known for his Topographia Provinciarum Austriacarum published in 1649 in Frankfurt am Main. He was a highly respected engraver and publisher of a large number of different books and publications. He is the author of wonderful descriptions of plants and flowers used in medicine, published in the book Die fruchbringede Gesellschaft in 1646 in Frankfurt am Main. Theatri Europei also contains maps of Croatian areas, for example a map of Senj, a map of the surroundings of Klis and Split or a map of the Zadar - Sibenik hinterland. He made the last map in co-authorship with Natal Bonifacio, and one of its copies is kept in the University Library in Split. Next to it, his map of Ragvsa can be found there.
