Summary
Marija Maglov: The best of artistic music in PGP
Research on artistic releases published in PGP starts from the assumption that publishing is a complex mechanism of action of various factors such as the paradigm of art music, socio-political organization, current cultural models and the institutional structure of the record company that implements decisions to form a kind of sound 'museum' of representative artifacts of music production. The title of the book imposed itself as a graphic formulation for several problems considered during the research. Although it primarily refers to popular music, the wording the best of can also be found when it comes to art music, indicating the numerous popularization strategies implemented with the intention of making art music more attractive to potential record buyers. The formulation the best of also serves as a metaphor for other problems. The formation of the canon of Western European art music was considered, as well as the local tradition, which represents a selection of representative works. At a certain point, they were positioned as the 'best of' the entire production of art music. In the context of the concept of democratization of culture and socialist culture, the inherent "enlightenment" effort to "educate" the public, art music, but also "high" art in general, are offered as the "best" that society, when it comes to culture, can provide. This book discusses the aforementioned problems and offers an overview of the art music releases in the PGP during the SFRY.
