Roberto Bellarmino (Montepulciano, 1542 - Rome, 1621), church teacher, Jesuit, author of the catechism that was approved by Pope Clement VIII for the entire Catholic Church after the Council of Trent. He is known for having participated in the reform of the calendar, he also participated in the correction of the first official edition of the Bible after the Council of Trent, he evaluated the settings of Giordano Bruno, he tried to reconcile Galileo with the Catholic Church. For Croats, it is particularly famous because it received the confession of faith of the first Uniate bishop in Croatia, Simeon Vratanje. His Catechism written in Latin as Doctrina Christiana was translated into numerous languages, including Croatian. Explanation of the Apostolic Symbols (Exspositio Symboli Apostolici), i.e. the interpretation of the Creed, was translated into Croatian by Petar Radovčić, who also signed himself as Pietro Guadenzio, i.e. Petrus Gaudentius (Split, 1572 - Rab, 1664). He was a Split canon, brothers in St. Jerome in Rome. Pope Urban VIII. appointed him bishop of Rab. He cared about the religious enlightenment of his believers and translated another book by Bellarmine, preparation for a good death - Teaching to die well...translated into the Dalmatian language (1658). His translation of the great Bellarmine's Catechism saw a second edition (1709). He is also mentioned by Jerolim Kavanjin in his work Wealth and poverty.
GAUDENCIJE, Petar (Petrus Gaudentius, Pietro Gaudenzi, Petar Radovčić), bishop (Split, 1572 — Rab, 1664). He was educated in Split. Year In 1602, he is mentioned as a canon of Split and to the brothers in the guest house of St. Jerome in Rome. Year In 1607, he successfully defended the rights of the Split Chapter against the archbishop's excesses before the cardinal assembly in Rome. Pope Urban VIII. appointed him bishop in Rab in March 1636. Year 1637–59. he held four synods in his diocese. From 1654, with numerous requests, he asked the Congregation for the Spread of Faith to publish the necessary theological works in the Croatian language. Thus, around 1658 (Š. Ljubić states 1653) the printing house of the Congregation printed A way to die well by Father Iv. Jezusa Maria translated into the Dalmatian language. The work was reprinted in 1657 and 1709. In some documents it is stated that it is a translation of Bellarmine's work De arte bene moriendi, and in others that it is a translation of Arte di benmorire by the barefoot Carmelite Giovanni Gesù Maria. He translated into Croatian the great Bellarmine catechism Expositio Symboli Apostolici Roberti Cardinalis Bellarmini under the title Interpretation of the Apostolic Symbols, that is, the visitation of Mr. Card. Bellarmina(published in the printing house of the Congregation in Rome in 1662 and 1709). WITH. Ljubić and C. Sommervogel maintain that he also translated Bellarmine's second work, De ascensione mentis in Deum – From the elevation of the soul to God, then Societas et Communio Spiritualis R. P. Dominici de Jesu Maria, in the translation Družtvo spuratva opca oca Domenik (Rome 1662, printed in the printing house of the Congregation) and The godly way to serve St. Mass. J. Burić also cites a work translated under the title A refuge for gaining knowledge of God. The poet J. Kavanjin dedicated several verses to him.
