Summary

Urmuz: Bizarre Pages

"He was a Dadaist before a Dadaist, a Surrealist before a Surrealist," said Eugène Ionesco. Even this recognition of today's somewhat forgotten and neglected Urmuz, uttered by his famous countryman, would be enough to arouse the attention and respect of readers interested in avant-garde, absurdity, innovation, parody, grotesque or anti-literature, as some have described Urmuz's texts. Despite the fact that these texts were very short (a "novel in four parts" on only a few pages!) and that he published only two of them during his lifetime, and only a dozen were found after his suicide in 1923, Urmuz is almost invariably cited in professional literature as a pioneer of surrealism, futurism, dadaism and expressionism! He lived, wrote and died in an unusual way, and his early and explosive appearance in Bucharest was so isolated from the main European trends of the aforementioned directions that it seems impossible. Although there are many parallels with each of the mentioned directions, Urmuz's work is not reduced to any of them, and it can be said with peace of mind that his importance lies precisely in the fact that he wrote in a way that no one before him had written. Spontaneous, rejected and contested, it was and remains almost incomprehensible original!
