Miano Léonora

Summary

Léonora Miano: The Red Queen

The story of the dystopian novel The Red Queen by Léonora Miano (translated by Mirela Alikalfić-Terzić), a multiple award-winning Cameroonian writer with a French address, is set in the futuristic alternative reality of the next century (year 2124), where the geopolitical coordinates of the world are turned upside down, with Europe occupying the position of an underdeveloped "primitive" culture that threatens the unity of Africa federation. Place: Katiopa, a prosperous and autarkic African continent, almost completely united, like the future United States of Africa, where the victims of old Europe came to find refuge. Time: a little more than a century after ours. It all starts with a love story between Boy, who teaches at the university, and Illung, the head of state. A forbidden story, against nature, which threatens to become a state affair. Because with her research, Boya got closer to the Fulas, the descendants of French immigrants who left their country during the 21st century, believing that they were occupied by migrants. In order to preserve their European identity, some headed to the sub-Saharan courtyard where their language was spoken, where they were still revered and where they could live among themselves. But their descendants no longer enjoy their former power: impoverished and overburdened, they have retreated into their own identity. The head of state, as well as his minister of interior and defense, are in favor of expelling these unassimilated populations, whom Boya recommends to reach out to. Will the red queen, having won the heart of a man who was one of the most respected actors of liberation, disarm his hand as well? For "hard" regimes, it is necessary to separate this pair at all costs...
