Đaur i Zulejha

Bazdulj Muharem

Summary

Muharem Bazdulj: Đaur and Zulejha

Đaur – a word as mysterious and dangerous as a hidden dagger; Zulejha - a name as rich and layered as life, leisure and sudden discovery. Is it possible to fall in love with a word, a name, Byron wondered. And would a rose really smell the same if it wasn't called a rose?" Overwhelmed by "worldly pain", Lord Byron, one of the greatest romantic poets, at the beginning of the 19th century embarks on a journey through the mysterious and wild Balkan Peninsula in search of the answers he lacks, which torment him and cause him not to sleep well at night. His two-week odyssey through Albania, which actually make up this novel, are both meditative and exciting, cathartic for both the protagonist and the reader. And Muharem Bazdulj overcomes the time distance of two centuries with a special storytelling process, so seductive that the story and the words from which it was created become that unique pleasure of reading that fogs the eyes, widens the nostrils, and tingles the ears. If all this seems a bit excessive - it is not.
