Summary
Dušan Kovačević: Dramas
Collected plays of Dušan Kovačević in one volume for the first time.
Twenty-two plays written in a period of more than half a century, from 1972 to 2024, two of which, "The Birthday of Mr. Nušić" and "The widowed life of a man", are being published for the first time.
The plays that made this writer one of the most important authors in the history of Serbian drama literature.
The inextricable link between reality and literature is the unifying thread of Kovačević's dramaturgy. The role of literature is to tell stories about reality, injecting truth and a critical note into those stories as properties that reality itself has taken away from them. Kovačević's plays try to establish an image in the stories of reality that is true, but also contains the pathos of a forbidden discovery. This discovery is not possible in reality, because it rejects it for ideological, political or cultural reasons, but it is possible and even necessary in literature, because the comedic potential and inner tension of this dramaturgy derive from the established difference between reality and its literary image. By changing his critical optics, Dušan Kovačević remains permanently attached to the idea of a theater that does not leave reality alone, no matter how much that reality changes.
