Summary
Juan Jose Millas: Two Women in Prague
Two Women in Prague (original Spanish: Dos mujeres en Praga) is an intriguing and layered psychological novel by the distinguished contemporary Spanish writer and journalist Juan José Millás, originally published in 2002. year, when he won the prestigious Spanish literary award Premio Primavera de Novela. The novel appeared in Croatian in 2003 by the publishing house Izvori, and it was translated from Spanish by Mario Marcos Ostojić. The plot begins with an unusual business and creative deal: Luz Acaso, a mysterious, depressed and lonely middle-aged woman, approaches a literary school with a unique request - she wants to hire a professional writer who would write a novel about her life based on her oral narration. The job is accepted by Álvaro Abril, a young and quite respectable writer who is experiencing a creative block, but also a deep personal crisis because his entire life is obsessed with the fixed idea that he was secretly adopted immediately after birth. As their regular meetings progress and Luz reveals her unusual biography, Álvaro begins to discover in disbelief the shocking and profound points of contact between her memories and his own family mystery. A third peculiar character enters the story, María José, a participant in Álvaro's workshop who wears a patch over her right eye because she is trying to write a "left-handed novel", believing that the world must be viewed from a completely different perspective in order to truly understand it. In this masterpiece of contemporary Spanish prose, Millás masterfully dissolves the boundaries between raw reality, distorted memories and pure literary fiction. The novel functions as a tense psychological network and a game of mirrors in which, through the motifs of loneliness, the search for identity and neurosis, it is revealed that a person sometimes has to invent his own life in order to bear inner wounds more easily.
