Several hundred years after the action of the novel "Life for the Stars", in the third part of the tetralogy "Cities in Flight" we meet again the mayor of New York City, John Amalfi, who is now more than 700 years old. As the city runs out of supplies, Amalfi is forced to dock in one of the neighboring systems, despite warnings from the ground police. After the entire city becomes hostage to the crunchers and they finally manage to escape, due to a large number of violations they have to go to the Rift, a vast expanse without stars and planets...
