Škiljan Tamara

Summary

Tamara Škiljan: A selection from ancient poetry - Greece

*The book has a dedication from the former owner

From this brief overview of Greek poetry, we can conclude that Greek literature, although often neglected in relation to Roman literature, is to a large extent woven into Western European civilization. The vast majority of poetic and prose literary forms originated in ancient Greece and exerted a strong influence on modern forms through Roman literature. When Europe, in the period of the Renaissance, began to rediscover Greek civilization and get to know its literature in the original, it simultaneously discovered that precisely in these works - both poetic and prose, both literary and scientific - are its real beginnings. Therefore, in order to understand any contemporary literature that has grown up in the Western cultural circle, knowledge of ancient Greek literature is necessary, and it has its source in poetic expression: one could thus say, with very little exaggeration, (as the Greeks already said) that European literature is actually only crumbs from Homer's table.
