Summary

Jonathan Harr: The Lost Painting of Michelangelo Merisio known as Caravaggio

The Lost Painting of Michelangelo Merisio known as Caravaggio is a vivid, skillfully written and enchanting work, which represents a special synthesis of nonfiction (it is a true event!) and historical and detective novel. The author alternates the exciting description of the search for the lost masterpiece "filmically" with extremely interesting details of Caravaggio's unusually turbulent life and the presentation of the astonishing beauty of his work. Because Caravaggio was a genius, a revolutionary painter, but also a man possessed by personal demons. More than four hundred years ago, he drank and made noise in the taverns and streets of Rome, Naples, Genoa... he hung out with people of dubious morals, and was also a frequent resident of prison. He gained fame and fortune at a relatively young age, but success did not change his unbridled nature, and luckily neither his "divine" giftedness and inspiration, so that all this time he painted marvelous works of extraordinary emotional and visual power. The painting The Capture of Christ, lost for centuries, and its mysterious fate and the circumstances of its disappearance, have fascinated Caravaggio's devotees for years. After the young student Francesca Cappelletti found a record in a dusty archive, the search for a priceless piece of art began. And then, after searching all over the continent and through hundreds of years of history, every trace of the picture is lost at the beginning of the last century - until a restorer took a closer look at the dusty and sooty picture from the dining room of the Jesuit residence in Dublin...
