Summary
Rajko Grlić, Goran Marković: Did you record this?
"It is a common cultural phenomenon that our best filmmakers turn to writing. When the regime made it impossible for them to make films, they turned to a simpler and cheaper way of telling stories. Film art, which is ruled by poltroons and ignoramuses, suffered a great deal of damage as a result, but literature gained enormously. The book you are holding in your hands is an example of such a happy circumstance. We persuaded Marković and Grlić to correspond at a time when their work as a director was becoming increasingly more inaccessible. They showed us how true talent - whether it's a film or a written word - always finds a way to express itself. With exceptional storytelling skills, these two recorded political upheavals, ecstatic barbarism, brilliant successes and unforgivable failures. While many were subjected to dictatorships, Marković and Grlić remained fearlessly upright and true to themselves." - Ante Tomić
