Peter Handke: Cursing the Audience and Other Plays

Peter Handke appeared on the theater scene in 1966 with the controversial play The Curse of the Audience, which he wrote at the age of twenty-two. He suddenly appeared as someone who diagnoses the current state of the theater and analyzes the audience's expectations of what should be played in the theater. Handke not only does not adhere to the Aristotelian rules of traditional theater, but even destroys the illusory character of modern plays: the illusion of being in the theater is broken for the viewer.

Spectator: or the actors scold him for coming to the play in the first place; or is subjected to some other "verbal torture"; or it was transferred from the theater outside, to the square where passers-by move, therefore, outside to life, because things happen outside, not in the theater; or the viewer really becomes a witness to inheritance disputes and quarrels in the family, just as it happens in the family; or the performance of a series of kitchen situations is seen on stage, presented only as a signaling gesture in the central space of household life; or it was moved to a bar, where the liveliest, or the most pointless, or the most shameless discussions about politics, economy, migration, suffering, love...
