Šehović Feđa

Summary

Feđa Šehović: The Book of Genesis

The Book of Genesis is a satirical and socially engaged novel by prominent Croatian writer Feđa Šehović, originally published in 1981 in the well-known End of the Century library of the Zagreb publisher Mladost. At the same time, this title rounds off and represents the sixth, final part of the author's acclaimed and comprehensive Dubrovak tralalogie (a cycle of satirical novels about the history and mentality of the eastern Adriatic area). The plot of the novel is set in an unnamed city on the Adriatic coast, and with a distinct sense of black humor and comedy in the tragic, it dissects the dramatic and gloomy immediate post-war period. In this prose, Šehović bravely and uncompromisingly grapples with the sensitive problem of twisting the original revolutionary enthusiasm and Skoje enthusiasm into rigid, dogmatic "Skoje". Through a tense and dynamic plot that can be read in one breath, the author exposes the face and the reverse of the ideology, precisely following how youthful idealism in conjunction with the harsh application of the new order turns into a training ground for political manipulations and police-intelligence games with people's destinies. Creating a sharp image of social hell and local tragicomedy, the novel functions as a sharp and universal critique of totalitarian mentality and abuse of power, remaining remembered as one of the bravest prose works in the late phase of Šehović's creativity.
