Summary
August Šenoa: Stories
The stories of August Šenoa represent one of the most important and most read collections of lyrical-epic poems in the history of Croatian literature. In these works, which he himself called historical ballads, Šenoa masterfully combined historical facts, folk tales and local legends with a clear moral and patriotic message. The collection was created in the spirit of the nineteenth century with the aim of strengthening national consciousness and teaching readers about the importance of harmony, honesty and love for the homeland, while condemning greed, betrayal and human malice. Through dynamic rhythm, rhymes and picturesque language that is easy to remember, the author brings to life dramatic stories from the past, ranging from the legendary curse of the miller who petrifies the wedding guests on Medvednica in stone weddings, to the cunning cobbler who manages to outwit the devil himself three times, all the way to the tragic and heroic death of the last Croatian king Petar Svačić on Mount Gvozd. Due to its exceptional artistic value, picturesque descriptions and strong ethical messages in which good always finds a way to victory, this collection has for generations held the status of an indispensable classic of domestic reading that uniquely connects history and popular imagination.
