Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy: Kreutzer's Sonata
Kreutzer's Sonata (1889) is one of the most controversial novels by Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, written in his late phase marked by a deep moral and religious crisis. The framework story is set in a train, where the main character, Pozdnišev, confesses to a stranger the story of his marriage, which ended tragically - with the murder of his wife due to sick jealousy. The central theme is a sharp criticism of marriage and sexuality. Pozdnishev (spokesman for Tolstoy's radical views at the time) claims that carnal passion and marriage are a "pig's bond" that destroys human spirituality and advocates absolute sexual abstinence. The title comes from Beethoven's Sonata no. 9 (Kreutzer). In the novella, music is portrayed as a powerful, almost dangerous force that awakens base passions and encourages emotional distraction, which Pozdnišev interprets as evidence of the woman's infidelity with the violinist. Due to its radical views on morality and the Church, the work was banned in Russia and the USA immediately after its publication.
