Summary
Lojze Wieser: Cooking under other stars
Although it presents a whole range of dishes from South Slavic areas, the book Cooking under other stars is much more than a cookbook. It is a tribute to family, homeland, childhood. Nostalgic for old times, the author brings back the aroma of a vanished world by reviving those tastes and smells. These stories about food are also stories about the author's upbringing and travels, they can also be read as a cultural study, and they are also enriched with unusual individual human destinies.
The title of this book indicates the significant role and high place that the author assigns to food culture. Namely, the book is dedicated to all those anonymous gastronomic creators, not only from his native Carinthia, but also from the whole of the former Yugoslavia, who themselves never "reached for the stars", but nevertheless made simple food, especially the food of our childhood and our past, shine like stars in the sky of our memories.
