Summary

Fiona Valpy: The Cypress Labyrinth

The Cypress Labyrinth is a wonderful new novel by the author of the hits Gift of the Past and Tales from Casablanca. Tuscany, 1943. The Scottish woman Beatrice is stuck in war-torn Italy, and her dream of an idyllic job abroad is irretrievably destroyed. Taking refuge in the Villa delle Colombe, she hides in Francesca and Edoardo's beautiful garden, at the heart of which is a complex labyrinth of cypress trees. But Beatrice is not the only one who sought refuge here. Francesca took the children and other refugees into the safety of the house, and as the war gets closer and closer to the estate, the residents are forced to see - and do - unimaginable things... In 2015, Tess arrives at Villa delle Colombe exhausted from the painful loss of her husband. Beatrice, now caretaker of the estate, takes her to the solace of its gardens, where Tess slowly begins to heal. But all hopes for peace are dashed by the arrival of Marc, the new owner of the estate who wants nothing more than to hand it over to builders. Disturbed, Beatrice realizes that if she wants to save the villa, she must finally discover the painful past of that wonderful place.
