Summary

Danilo Kiš: Lute and Scars

The book Lute and Scars brings Kiš's stories from his legacy, most of them written at a similar or the same time as the stories from the book Encyclopedia of the Dead.
To that extent, it can be said that the stories from the book Lute and Scars represent the last turning of the screw in the incomparable creative workshop of Danilo Kiš.
These stories embody one of possible outcomes of this great adventure.
Confronting life and story, facts and fiction, the language of documents and the power of imagination, Danilo Kiš in his last stories tells about Eden Fon Horvat and the fate of Central Europe, about stateless people and graves, about Juri Golec, about love and death, about Belgrade, about Andrić, about debts and a world that always has two unconnected sides.
- Tales from the Kiš region: "Stateless", "Jurij Golec", "Lute and Scars", "Marathon and Judge", "Poet" and "Debt", were written between 1980 and 1986, either with the intention of being included in the book Encyclopedia of the Dead, or as an echo of it. We added to them the short two-part prose "A and B", which had no headings in the manuscript. although it does not belong to the narrative genre, it functions as a metaphor (metonymy) in relation to the largest part of Kiš's prose work: hence its place in this book, and that at the end, "as a kind of lyrical epilogue" - says Mirjana Miočinović, the editor of the book in the final note. - We gave the book the title Luta and scars guided by the fact that Kiš titled two of his collections, out of a total of three, after one of the stories, having less in mind its privileged place, and more the title's ability to thematically unify all the others. It seemed to us that something similar was achieved with this title.
