Summary

Michael Nicoll Yangulanaas: Flight of the Hummingbird

Michael Nicoll This simple and inspiring parable vividly illustrates the importance of taking small steps towards a big goal. Told since ancient times among the Quechuan people of South America and the Haida people of the North Pacific, this story has become a talisman for environmentalists and activists around the world. With beautiful illustrations by Michael Nikola Yangulanaas and supported by Nobel Prize winner Wangara Matai, Flight of the Hummingbird encourages us all to live in harmony with the environment and protect the world's precious but very limited natural treasures. The hummingbird is a symbol of wisdom and courage.

In this haunting story, a determined hummingbird battles a raging fire that threatens the forest, making us think about how strength isn't always about size. However, it is always about persistence and commitment.

A terrible fire was burning and raging. All the animals got scared and ran away from their homes. The elephant and the tiger, the beaver and the bear, all ran away, while the panicked birds flew over them.
They gathered at the edge of the forest and watched. All the animals were there, except one.
Only Dukdukdia, the little hummingbird, did not want to leave the forest. Dukdukdia quickly flew to the stream. He caught a drop of water with his beak.
Dukdukdia flew back and poured water on the fire.
He flew to the stream again, brought another drop and continued like that – back and forth, back and forth.: Flight of the Hummingbird
