Summary
Albert Camus: The Reverse and the Face
The Reverse and the Face is the first work that Albert Camus published under his own name in Algeria in 1937. It consists of a series of essays on the Algerian district of Belcourt, as well as two trips, first to the Balearic Islands and then to Prague and Vicenza. It was reprinted in 1958, with a preface in which Camus reviews his previous work and critically evaluates his writing.
I know that my source is in "The Face and the Face", in that world of poverty and light in which I lived for a long time, and the memory of that world still protects me from the two opposing dangers that threaten every artist: bitterness and pleasure. First of all, poverty was never a misfortune for me: the light shone luxuriantly in it. Even my rebellions were illuminated by her. These were almost always - and I think I can honestly say this - rebellions for everyone, to bring everyone's life to light.
