Summary
Mario Puzo: The Family
completed by Carol Gino
As the Black Death ravaged Europe, mowing down half the population, many citizens turned their eyes from heaven to earth in despair. In an effort to master the material world, the philosophically minded tried to unravel the secrets of existence and unravel the great mysteries of Life, while the poor only hoped to somehow overcome their suffering. I tako je Bog pao na Zemlju kao Čovjek, a kruta vjerska doktrina srednjega vijeka izgubila svoju moć, otvorivši put proučavanju velikih antičkih civilizacija Rima, Grčke i Egipta. As the thirst for crusades abated, the heroes of Olympus were reborn and fought Olympic battles anew. Man pitted his mind against the heart, which belonged to God, and Reason prevailed. It was a time of great achievements in the fields of philosophy, art, medicine, and music. Culture was celebrated with great pomp and ceremony, but that too had its price. The old laws ceased to be valid, before the new ones were created. The transition from strict faith in the word of God and eternal salvation, to the glorification of Man and faith in reward in the material world, called humanism, was actually a very difficult transition. Then Rome was not a Holy city, but a place where lawlessness reigned. Citizens were robbed on the streets, their houses were broken into, prostitution was widespread, and hundreds of people were killed every week.
