»This is not a book. This is not even a memoir, and I am telling you all this because so many events from my childhood happen to be running through my head... Sometimes these are childish records, such because of personal weakness, but also such to preserve dear thoughts - albeit a little crazy - just caught in the fear of a weak memory and in plunging to the very essence of my art. Therefore, if the work of art were just an accidental work, then all these notes would be completely useless... After all, this is not a book, this is just chatter...«
Thus the famous painter "chattering" presents his "notes scattered without any order, similar to dreams, similar to life, collected from various parts..." created during his stay in French Polynesia. In 1901, Gauguin moved to the island of Hiva Oa and built the "House of Pleasure", as he called it, where he painted and recorded his experiences, thoughts and confessions, which were later published in the book Before and After. In addition to notes on artistic and life views, there are also interesting autobiographical records, of which we particularly highlight those about hanging out with Van Gogh - "about the two of us, and about some events suitable to shed light on the misconceptions that were spreading in some circles..."
Today everyone knows about "Gauguin the artist" and his priceless works of art, and here the lesser known "Gauguin the man" and his distinctive view of the world and art. Thus, for example, advocating artistic courage, he says in a "rocker" way: "Focus your strength, focus them persistently; run, run until you run out of breath and die madly!
