Summary
Alexandre Dumas: The Nutcracker
The Nutcracker is a magical Christmas fairy tale written by Alexandre Dumas as an adaptation of a darker tale by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The action begins on Christmas Eve in the home of the Silberhaus family, where the little girl Marie receives an unusual, somewhat ugly wooden nutcracker in the shape of a man as a gift. When the clock strikes midnight, Marie witnesses the incredible revival of the toys and begins a dramatic battle between the army of toys, led by the brave Nutcracker, and the army of the evil, seven-headed Mouse King. Marie helps the Nutcracker win the battle, after which he takes her to the wonderful, fairy-tale Kingdom of Sweets. Dumas gave this story a much gentler, brighter and more romantic tone compared to Hoffmann's original, emphasizing the power of a child's imagination, devotion and love that eventually succeeds in breaking the curse and turning the wooden doll back into a handsome prince. It was this Dumas version that served as the direct basis for Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, which became an indispensable part of the winter holiday tradition around the world.
