Summary

Ivan Tokin: The first way out for Rozarito

A collection of short prose. The first edition for Rosarito is a collection of Toquin's short prose published from 2018 to 2025. This morning at six o'clock the lake was calm, the wind was slowly picking up, the light was on behind the house behind the hill beyond the horizon. I heard someone say to someone: - I'm Marlon Brando, and you're Steve McQueen. - And I stood on the terrace and looked for seagulls above the lake, next to the lake and everywhere I could see. There were none. I knew that someone once said: - You are a promise at dawn, and I am the morning after. - And I took the first right, through the forest and four beautiful bends to the bay I know, across the parking lot and down a million steps to the beach. There was no one on the beach, the wind picked up, the waves had white humps, not all, just some, but there was enough white on the endless blue, enough for a picture. The aerosols above the surface were in shades of blue, and a careful observer would see shapes that could come to mind. There were no seagulls. I climbed those hundred million steps to the big hotel terrace I know, it's the place I know most in the world. There were no seagulls, except me. Ivan Tokin writes about lemons, seagulls, hunger, about people who do their job or do nothing, about ships, vampires, wolves, Santa Claus, Spider-Man or members of the red-haired elite. The world in his prose is not bigger than it is, but it is narrow for him, that is clear, and from this discomfort emerges the reality, in which even Stara Borča is no longer where it was. The author does not describe feelings, but the conditions in which they arise. That's why humor is not a joke, violence is not a spectacle, and tenderness is a humble, quiet force that holds this world together.
