De Maistre Xavier

Summary

Xavier de Maistre: Travels in my room

When he was sentenced to house arrest in 1790 for participating in a duel, Xavier de Maistre came up with a genius idea in a moment of leisure: unlike the famous explorers and their travelogues from grandomaniac travels, he would describe his journey in the room in which he was imprisoned! Thus, by chance, a soldier who was completely devoted to his profession and had never thought of writing before, became a writer. And what kind! Simply, surrendering to the imagination of an open soul, free thoughts and feelings, he wrote a lucid and fluttering work woven from digressions, quips, exclamations and anecdotes. Things in the room: furniture, a letter, a portrait, a dried flower or memories of a beloved woman - he painted everything dreamily poetically, with a refined joke and a wistful smile.
Although he traveled a lot in his life, from Italy to Russia, where he fought and later lived and died, Xavier de Maistre tells the well-meaning reader to enjoy his surroundings, in small things and people, to notice and discover a "wonderful world" in the seemingly boring everyday life. Or, as Alain de Bottom, one of his admirers, wrote it more beautifully: "In his pink and blue nightgown, contented within the walls of his bedroom, Xavier de Maistre invites us to, before we travel to distant places, try to see around us what we normally hardly look at." and now, after two centuries, the Colorful Shop is taking them off the dusty shelves and publishing them together, with original illustrations!
