»At odds with myself and everything around me, in 1951, almost as a personal hobby, I began to write The Split Viscount ... a completely fantastic story ... which takes place in distant epochs and in fictional regions ... For a long time I thought about a man split in half lengthwise, each part of which would move on its own. So one half survives, and the other will appear only in the second part... A sure success system would be to create one good and one bad half, a contrast in the spirit of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ... but my intention was to suppress all human divisions, to stand up for a complete man...
The spontaneous inner development of the story led me again to what has always been and remains my true narrative theme: a person voluntarily imposes a difficult rule on himself and follows it to the end, because without it he would not be himself, neither for himself nor in relation to others... Thus, the divided viscount is given less freedom than others, and his movement is determined by himself plot. And yet, even so limited, he managed to bring out his basic duplicity, which corresponds to something that has not yet been fully clarified in the author's mind..."
