Summary

Leonida Kovač: Reenactments

Etymologically, the name of the game that Austerlitz plays with photographs, solitaire, leads to the concept of patience. After all, in 2012, Grant Gee made the film-essay Patience (After Sebald) in which he establishes a relationship between Sebald's way of being and the motifs from his book The Rings of Saturn. Patience is a quality with which Sebald's characters, as well as his writing, resist the impossibility, which Barthes writes about, of understanding duration.

Patience is not accepting the impotence that Flusser talks about, arguing that photography begins a 'post-history' in which conceptual thought disappears in the process of recoding thought into numbers, in the mechanization of thought that makes people incompetent to think and leads them to leave it to apparatuses. The Discourses of Leonida Kovač is an incomparable book in contemporary Croatian essay writing dedicated to literature and the visual arts, not only because it is inspired by the "metaphysical intervention" undertaken by Walter Benjamin on the way of thinking about dialectical and historical materialism, but primarily because the main subject of analytical discussion, the introduction as well as the main character, Austerlitz - taken from the novel of the same name by the German writer W. G. Sebald from 2001 - is here, on the pages her book, she meets Malte Laurids Brigge from Rainer Marie Rilke's "Notes", from 1910. Austerlitz, in Sebald's novel, at one point says to his interlocutor: And wouldn't it be interesting if even in the past, in what has already happened and which has mostly disappeared, we have agreements and we have to find places and people there, who, as it were, from the other side of time, are somehow connected with us. The events invite readers to such an almost impossible intellectual but also moral adventure: to find places and people, to discover the agreements we have with them from the past, which - from the other side of time - we were not even aware of.

With this intriguing book, the author shows us how it is, after all, possible.
