Mijat Stojanović was born in 1818 in Babina Greda, which was then part of the sixth Brod Regiment. He started school only at the age of ten, and already at the age of fourteen he started working as a teacher's assistant in Sl. Šamac. In his autobiography ˝The Mishaps and Mishaps of My Life˝, he wrote that already at the age of fifteen he started writing down ˝...phrases, expressions, proverbs, stories, poems...˝ and this was the beginning of his ethnographic work, which, along with pedagogical and literary work, he would systematically deal with throughout his life. twenty-four year old in 1844 in Divaldo's printing house in Osijek. Since then he has been constantly writing and publishing his works in print. He published his first works in Gaj's ˝Danica˝, and he also published in ˝Slavnski jugu˝, ˝Zagrebački katolichki list˝, ˝Prijatelj puka˝, since the fifties he has been a constant contributor to Bogović's ˝Nevena˝, and when the paper stopped being published, he published in ˝Naše gore list˝, later ˝Dragoljub˝ and many other literary and professional newspapers.
He is one of the pioneers of Croatian journalism. He was particularly prolific as an ethnographer.
Mijat Stojanović died on September 18, 1881 in Zagreb and was buried in Mirogoj.
