Summary

Robert Perišić: A poor man with a headache

The third book of poems by Robert Perišić, an average follower of literary events known above all as a British short story writer and author of widely read, translated and award-winning novels — may surprise that same follower. The poetic signature of the author — who named realist poetry, and in prose he himself mostly adhered to a somewhat more broadly understood neorealist style — is namely deeply immersed in the fabric of language, to the point that he becomes the primary protagonist, not to say the hero, of Perišić's poetic texts. So is the Poor Man Whose Headache is above all an effective speech mask; a vaguely delineated Santa Claus of never-ending transition, a multifaceted outline reflected in the linguistic stream along which Perišić's poet whips in a kayak slalom. Fragments of intimate experiences, cans of everyday tragedy, drifts of media debris, scraps of literature and popular culture, bubbles of humor, shells of happiness and music that warmed our hearts float along the path — as obstacles and discarded medals. Perišić drinks, along with the reader, and if they fall over — which is also foreseen — they swallow the text in which it is possible to breathe, strongly and with full lungs. Jump in! (KP3)
