A military coup is being prepared, and the guitarist Couto learns that Dulce, his first love and the singer of their once famous band, has died. Evening descends on the streets buzzing with life, and Couto wanders from bar to bar remembering the woman he loved, the uprising against the Portuguese and the years when he performed around the world playing music carried by the spirit of newly won freedom.
