Summary

Sylvain Prudhomme: Veliki

Sylvain Prudhomme's novel "Veliki" was declared the book of the year by Lire magazine, and was awarded the Georges Brassens, Prix Climax, Musique et Litterature and Prix de la Porte Doree.

Veliki are Couto, Atchutchi, Tundu, Miguelinho, Djon, Serifo, Dulce and other members of the Super Mama Djombo group, whose the songs were written in the seventies, during the struggle for the independence of Guinea-Bissau.

The year is 2012, the political situation is tense again. A military coup is being prepared, and the guitarist Couto learns that Dulce, his first love and the singer of their once famous band, has died. Evening descends on the streets buzzing with life, and Couto wanders from bar to bar remembering the woman he loved, the uprising against the Portuguese and the years when he performed around the world playing music carried by the spirit of newly won freedom.

While gunshots echo through the city heralding another political upheaval, the band's former line-up gathers to hold a concert in honor of Dulca and the time gone by. hopes.
