What I will present here, reader, is my agony, my struggle for Christianity, the agony of Christianity in me, then its death and its resurrection in every moment of my intimate life.
After exile in Fuerteventura and in the deep pain of exile, Unamuno flees to Paris, where he composes "for a universal audience and especially a French one" (O.c., 7, 305) THE AGONY OF CHRISTIANITY, the product of an intimate despair that overwhelmed him so much that he tried to overcome it by force of will. Moving away from Salamanca and from his family, the leaden Parisian sky, the French language - all this gave birth to deep sadness in those long months of true emotional and spiritual torment. The weeks spent in Fuerteventura, although difficult, were filled with anger, indignation, the feeling that he was victimized by an unjust order, but also with the satisfaction of being the protagonist of an incident that provoked declarations of support from important European and American intellectuals. The "escape" to Paris postponed the drama of the episode, but soon after Unamuno was forgotten and abandoned by the magazine Le Quotidien, which organized his retreat to France, and which reduced his frequent visits to Montparnasse to a circle of exiles, who, in general, did not inspire in him either enthusiasm or passion...
