Jacques Heers: The Birth of Capitalism in the Middle Ages

The birth of capitalism in the Middle Ages is evidenced by its various forms that appeared at that time: interest-bearing loans, the word "stock market", various speculations, and ultimately the vibrancy of commercial and financial companies at that time. All layers of society participate in this phenomenon: it does not only apply to Jews and Lombards, the bourgeois are far more numerous than these foreigners, and at the same time more competitive due to the extent of the social layers they are able to capture. In this sense, it is not an exaggeration to talk about "people's capitalism". The fact that the church kept multiplying the prohibitions of green-grossing and loans only speaks of how little they were respected. However, when we talk about real power, it does not lie in the hands of merchants, but of greengrocers. They were at the top of the scale in the city, imposing themselves on the masters, and the Medici are just one such example.
