Summary
Leidulf Melve: What is the Middle Ages?
The answer to the question "what is the Middle Ages?" it depends on who you put it on. This book provides insight into four different responses, or narratives, about the Middle Ages. In the first, archaic, the Middle Ages is the notorious "dark age", characterized by wars, diseases and the Church, and in which there is nothing else "except stupidity and simpletons", as the Enlightenment historian Gabrijel Mabli said. In the second, romantic narrative, which was born at the beginning of the 19th century, the Middle Ages is the age of noble knights and imposing cathedrals, as well as the age in which the unadulterated essence of the national being and language of many European nations is preserved. The third narrative about the "modern Middle Ages" indicates how much modern societies owe to the Middle Ages, in which most modern institutions (such as the university) and even modern states themselves were conceived. This narrative dominated historiography from the second half of the 19th century until the 70s of the last century, when new questions began to be asked and unknown and neglected sides of the Middle Ages were discovered. The narrative of the "new Middle Ages" does not focus on rulers, great battles and continuity, but on the marginal and subjugated (women, peasants...), everyday, fragmentary, discontinuous and discursive.
All these points of view, no matter how different from each other, tell us about the reasons why this period is important for our current understanding of the world and history. Presenting them, the Norwegian historian Leidult Melve provides the reader with a brief introduction to important aspects of the Middle Ages, as well as an insight into the creation of knowledge about history, not forgetting to mention contemporary tendencies as well as the tasks and challenges of future historiography.
