Summary
Franjo Tuđman: Croatia, Europe, European Union
Croatia has always been in Europe as an integral part of it and this is exactly how we could, as academician Dubravko Jelčić notes, summarize the strategic basis of Franjo Tuđman's political doctrine in one sentence.
Consistent with his vision of a free Croatia, Jelčić notes in the preface of the book, Tuđman in May 1990 at the request of the Austrian journalist (Kurier) what will happen if Yugoslavia, which still exists at the time, does not want to join the European Community, categorically answered that Croatia will join Europe even without Yugoslavia.
Jelčić states that Tuđman was not a Eurosceptic, but not a Eurofanatic either. Summary of Tuđman's policy towards the European Union, Jelčić concludes with one sentence - We belong to Europe and we want to join the European Union, but with our own identity, upright and without dictates.
