This very interesting essay by J. M. G. Le Clézio, winner of the Nobel Prize, describes at the same time the conquest and destruction of pre-Columbian civilizations, as well as the richness of these cultures that is manifested in their myths, rituals, ceremonies, celebrations, etc.
"By losing them, by destroying them, we have also lost what is truly essential. We have lost magic and beauty. Our Western civilization is so much of all this. deprived, it is so insignificant, that the author wonders about the consequences of this disappearance. What is the force that always motivates us to destroy and erase what seems far from our Western model of life and our values? Those worlds, those civilizations now live only in the memory of a few people and a few books that no one reads..."
