Summary

Manfred Mittermayer: Tomas Bernhard - Biography

No author after the Second World War polarized the Austrian public so much, just as no writer in that country, even among people who are only slightly interested in literature, became as famous as Tomas Bernhard. Although in his homeland he was first perceived primarily as a writer prone to scandals, he rose to become a highly respected author of novels, stories and plays in the entire German-speaking world, and soon in the world. Today, his work belongs to world literature: Tomas Bernhard's books have been translated into forty-five languages, his plays are performed in South America and East Asia.
The way in which Bernhard's life and his work are interwoven is complex. He modeled many of the main characters after his grandfather Johannes Frojmbihler, the man who marked his youth; the connection of his texts with real people and events was the cause of many excitements, as with the affair surrounding the novel "Forest Cutting". In addition, a kind of correspondence between the statements of his literary characters and his own statements makes the comparison of reality with fiction challenging, but also difficult: Bernhard's books are by no means just veiled self-description. At the same time, his appearance in public was never completely devoid of stylization and irony. Thus, Bernhard presents himself as a virtuoso "director" of his own performances, and his work as a puzzle between existential confusion and irony. Perhaps this is precisely where Bernhard's unusual appeal lies.
