Summary

Pierre Mortier: View and plan of Šibenik with the port of Šibenik

Pierre Mortier, (1661 - 1711), Publisher and map dealer. At the end of the 17th century, he made a copper engraving of the fortification situation of Zadar. He created the best plan of Šibenik in the 17th century. On this copperplate in a large folio format, you can see the Turkish siege of the city in 1645. The panorama along with the mentioned plan is drawn so that all the buildings can be recognized. He also created a plan of the city of Trogir in a similar format, on which only the city ramparts and fortifications were drawn, and the surrounding area was shown in a panoramic view. The Venetians captured Klis from the Turks in 1648 during the Candian War. Then a survey was carried out of the wider area of Klis in the hinterland of Split. Based on this, several copper engravings were made in 1695. Mortier published a large situational map with a plan and view of Klis. He published a map of the Hungarian lands from 1702 in his atlas Le Theater de la guerre in Amsterdam. It shows the war operations of the Austrian army with the Turks until the conclusion of the Peace of Karlovac. Apart from Hungary, Croatia, Slavonia, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Serbia can be seen on it. In that atlas, a plan of Zadar, views of Knin and its surroundings, plans of Trogir and Split were published. All originals are kept in the War Archives in Vienna, and the plan of Zadar in the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb.
