The earthquake that will spread through Croker's empire will affect some completely innocent and unaware people on the other side of America, such as the family of the young manual laborer Conrad Hensley, a man who also believes in the American dream, that is, in the version that says that you can make a normal living from honest work.
The fates of Charlie Croker, a man at the top who always has an ace up his sleeve, and Conrad Hensley, a man who has reached the bottom and who has nothing at all except his honesty and courage, will be intertwined in a tapestry rich in events, covered by a wide-angle camera that nothing can escape, and full of characters that seem to have entered the pages of the book from real life. His well-known works The Bonfire of Vanity and The Real Thing were transferred to the screen after, like this latest novel of his, they successfully occupied the very top of the list of best-selling books worldwide.
