Zane Grey: On the Rainbow Trail
John Shefford arrives in Red Lake, Arizona Territory, in April, having come from the East. At trader Presbrey's post office, he finds a missionary (Willetts) struggling with a Navajo girl. He punches the fleeing man before finding Presbrey outside. Presbrey welcomes him and equips him with equipment and advice, and offers him a job, but he declines, preferring to travel to Kayenta, a trading post further north. On his way to Kayenta, Shefford encounters a man (Shadd) who intends to rob and kill him, but flees at the approach of another, who proves to be a Navajo, Nas Ta Bega, accompanied by a girl from Red Lake, whom he describes as his sister, Glen Naspa. The two take Shefford to Kayent, where he meets the merchant Withers. That night, he told Withers that he had been a minister in Illinois and had become good friends with a man named Venters, who was a cowboy for a wealthy Mormon woman from Utah, Jane Withersteen, who had adopted a child, Fay Larkin, but had fled the Mormon establishment with another cowboy, Lassiter. The three entered a hidden canyon - Surprise Valley - and closed the entrance with a landslide; Shefford is looking for a girlfriend, Fay. Withers tells Shefford about a secret Mormon village of "sealed women"—the extra wives of Mormon polygamists—in a valley near the Utah border to which he occasionally runs supply trains. He notes that he once heard the name Fay Larkin in the nearby village of Stonebridge, Utah, and gives Shefford a job driving his freight train.
