Summary
Slavenka Drakulić: Frida or about pain
The novel is inspired by the life of the famous Mexican painter Frida Khalo, life partner of the equally famous Mexican painter Diego Rivera. Frida is presented from the perspective of the pain she suffered throughout her life due to numerous illnesses since childhood, and especially due to a serious accident when a steel bar pierced her stomach, her leg was completely crushed and her spine was permanently damaged. In order to shorten the time spent in bed and escape from physical and mental pain, Frida started painting and thus became one of the most famous painters of the 20th century. The novel is structured in a fragmentary manner, so the events of Frida's life, her relationship with her parents, her sister, her love, alternate without any special chronological order. Despite the harrowing theme and tragic ending, the novel is read in one breath.
