Lav Nikolajević Tolstoy: The Forged Coupon and Other Stories
The Forged Coupon is a novel by Lav Nikolajević Tolstoy written between 1902 and 1904, and published posthumously in 1911. It is divided into two parts that show the contrast between the spread of evil and the power of redemption: First part (Chain of Evil): The story begins with a petty fraud of the young student Mitja, who, in order to repay a small debt, forges a two-ruble coupon by adding zeros to it. This act sets off a "moral avalanche" – the coupon passes through the hands of merchants, peasants and officials, causing a series of misfortunes: job losses, unjust arrests, alcoholism and even murder. Second part (The power of good): The focus shifts to the "counter wave" of good that begins when one of the characters, affected by the consequences of his actions, sincerely repents. Tolstoy shows how one act of mercy and faith can stop the cycle of violence and transform the lives of those who have hit rock bottom. Tolstoy uses mathematical precision to show the "butterfly effect" – how a small sin can lead to social disaster. The work emphasizes the deep responsibility of each individual for his actions towards his fellow man. The central message is that evil can only be stopped by humility and love, not by further violence. The novel served as a template for Robert Bresson's famous film L'Argent (Money) from 1983. Due to the criticism of the state, the police and the church, Russian censors delayed its publication for a long time.
