The narrator in the first person - a housewife and (former) artist - is in the middle of a complex crisis (civil life, marriage, family, fear of creativity). On a narrative level, the confession follows the events of one week in the life of the heroine. The second level consists of memories triggered by events from the first level and, to a lesser extent, dreams. The combination of these levels in the reader ultimately creates a kind of semi-catharsis that hints at the possibility that the heroine will overcome her crisis.
