Summary

Brittany Bennett: My Missing Half

The novel My Missing Half is an intriguing story about twins that problematizes the issue of the black race in America.

The Vignes twins grew up inseparable in the sixties of the 20th century in Mallard, Louisiana, a town where only light-skinned black people live. Stella and Desiree Vignes are tall and beautiful and dream of a better life. When they run away to New Orleans as teenagers, Stella discovers that she can pass for a white woman, and thus begins a rift that will forever separate the twins. Stella disappears in California and continues to pretend to be a white woman, hiding her past from her husband and daughter. Desiree leaves her abusive husband and returns to Mallard with her daughter Jude, who is "black as tar". Jude is desperate to find an environment in which to fit in, goes to college in California and discovers that he is not only looking for himself but for his mother's sister.

And yet, even though they are separated by many kilometers and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their daughters' life paths meet?

Brit Bennett interweaves multiple threads and generations of families, from the extreme South of America to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, telling a story that is both a deeply engaging emotional family story and an excellent historical exploration.
The novel My Missing Half looks at the lasting influence of the past on decisions, desires and expectations, and explores some of the reasons for many and the areas in which people sometimes they feel the urge not to live the life of the environment they came from but someone else.
