Summary
Honore de Balzac: An unknown masterpiece. Sarrasin. Gambara
An unknown masterpiece, Sarrasine, Gambara, are three famous novellas by Balzac that relate to painting, theater and music and represent a selected corpus of texts dedicated to art, the artist and creation in general. In The Unknown Masterpiece, the canvas has its own life, just like the painter: it reveals the drama of the great artist, teacher and perfectionist Frenhofer, who takes ten years to complete the painting, and when he shows it to his friends, they only see a museria in it. Paolo Gambara, a troubled composer, as Frenhofer, searches for the absolute completely blinded by his mystical vision of music, while the sculptor Sarrasine falls madly in love with a castrato. Balzac's scenography outlines impossible love, unspeakable secrets in which eroticism and aesthetics are connected in a special way.
