Oliver Twist is a novel by Charles Dickens. It was originally published by Bentley's Miscellany as a serialized novel, with the first installment appearing in February 1837 and published once a month until April 1839. George Cruikshank drew illustrations for one installment each month.
Oliver Twist is considered the first novel in the English language with a child as its main character and is known for Dickens's non-romantic portrait of criminals and their dirty lives. The book's subtitle, The Parish Boy's Progress, is an allusion to Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress and a series of popular caricatures drawn by William Hogarth in the 18th century.[
As an early example of a social novel, the book sought to warn the public about a number of social ills of the time, including the Poor Law which forced the poor to work, child labor and the recruitment of children as criminals. Dickens mocks the hypocrisy of his time by surrounding the serious themes of the novel with sarcasm and dark humor. Some believe that the novel was inspired by Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose testimonies about the difficult life of a child worker in a textile mill were popularly read in the 1830s.
