Stendhal Marie-Henri Beyle

Summary

Marie-Henri Beyle Stendhal: The Parma Carthusian Monastery

Ten years after the masterpiece Red and Black, Stendhal (1783-1842) near the end of his life creates Parma Carthusia, "a novel written at a gallop" (he dictated it in Paris in 52 days). Fabrice del Dongo, another hero for all time, is at odds with the demands of the society he lives in; he is of aristocratic origin and has no Julien Sorel ambitions to climb the social ladder, but his guiding star is also Napoleon Bonaparte.

The novel takes place in Italy, on Lake Como, and then in the fictitious Parma (with a trip to the Battle of Waterloo, which fascinated Leo Tolstoy). Stendhal's way of storytelling is far ahead of his time, the characters of the protagonists are not strictly defined, but change according to the events, and the writer often uses their inner monologues.

This entire love-adventure-political novel is like one huge dream in which the entire life of the main character (from 1798 to 1830) and the characters surrounding him unfolds: the fascinating Duchess Sanseverina, Count Mosca, Duke Ernesto IV of Parma, Clelia Conti, etc. Love and passion dominate the novel in all its forms.
